Afghan banks have trouble establishing international financial relationships due to the general lack of modern, real-time, online and secure banking and payment services. Afghanistan Payment Systems (APS) is a new company that is already playing a lead role in modernizing the Afghanistan retail banking market. They are doing this through providing an innovative electronic mobile payment service to enhance retail banking in the country. Although payments though SWIFT services are available in all Afghan banks, APS has recognized the need for real-time payment systems, which are user friendly, fast and secure – to better support the local community.
With the support of Da Afghanistan Bank (DAB) the domestic electronic payment process – AfPay – was officially launched by APS on 14 December 2016. This payment scheme is unique in that it enables account holders to use any ATM in the country and/or use a mobile banking service. APS is already working to enhance the service through the establishment of a payment gateway that supports electronic payment and e-services. This ensures that APS can compete in the international and domestic markets with other similar international payment schemes such as Visa/Master card, M-Paisa, and MyMoney.
