In 2002, less than 200,000 people in Afghanistan had access to telephones. Today more than 15 million Afghans use mobile phones and approximately 85% of the population has access to telecommunications networks.
This technological leap has not only connected Afghans to each other, but has also had a significant economic impact through access to the nationwide mobile financial services sector – using mobile phones to transfer money safely and instantly, reducing the need for cash.
