This Ministry of Counter Narcotics (MCN) data repository has been generously funded by the people of Japan, and has also been supported by the governments of Canada and the UK. With their support, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) was able to commission a customised, purpose-built data repository for the use of the MCN Research Department.
This data repository will allow the MCN to record and report on statistics gathered from a wide variety of sources. For the first time, specifically counter-narcotic indicators are being drawn together so that more informative comparison of datasets can be achieved. Thus, not only will this data repository bolster the MCN’s ability to meet its national and international reporting requirements, it will genuinely expand the tool box by which Afghanistan’s counter narcotics polices are assessed and adapted.
The database will continue to expand as data sets become available, and will form the cornerstone of MCN research into narcotics issues. It is also hoped that this resource will also further the analytical abilities of the MCN’s partner ministries, namely the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Public Health, the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, and the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development.
